IRI Peru meets with new President, pushes forests agenda

IRI Peru met with the new President of the country and Laura Vargas, IRI Peru national facilitator presented a speech on the work of IRI, conveying the concern of the forest situation in the Amazon. During the pandemic, deforestation has reached extremely heightened levels with no clear policy or response from the state. Laura Vargas relayed that this problem not only threatens the tropical rainforests themselves but also the health and development of the population, that healthy forests and water provide access to fish farming, agroforestry, tourism, and more. The speech delivered to the President also featured the agreement signed with the Ministry of Environment and requested the signing of a similar agreement with the Ministry of Justice, which was accepted by the Minister of Justice, who was present at the meeting. See the speech here.
