IRI Peru defends Wampis people against invasion of their territory by illegal mining

The Vicariate of Jaén, Monsignor Alfredo Vizcarra, issued a statement in solidarity with the people of the Wampis and asked for action from the state for the uncontrolled advance of illegal mining. IRI Peru called for action from members of Congress and the Minister of the Environment. With engagement of IRI Peru, the Commission on Indigenous Peoples and Environment of the Congress also made a request of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers that the Wampis area be included as a priority area of the Roundtable for the Fight Against Illegal Mining. In addition, IRI Peru sent a letter to the Minister of the Environment requesting a meeting to discuss the issue and requested support from the other bishops of the Amazon, to join the position of the Vicariate of Jaén.
