On April 21, the world received the sad news of the death of Pope Francis, a spiritual leader who transcended geographical, religious and generational boundaries. In honor of the Holy Father, the Interreligious Initiative for Tropical Forests in Colombia managed the publication of the editorial column “Francis: the Pope of the Amazon and of the common home,” published in the national newspaper El Espectador and signed by Monsignor Francisco Duque, bishop of the Anglican Church of Colombia.
“Since the publication of the encyclical Laudato Si’ in 2015, Pope Francis has illuminated the path of global ecological awareness. With courageous and committed language, he denounced the structural causes of environmental collapse, limitless extractivism, climate injustice and indifference to the suffering of the most vulnerable communities, especially those that inhabit the lungs of the world: tropical forests and, in particular, the Amazon,” says the religious leader, also president of the Interreligious Council of Colombia, in the column. an organization that is part of the Advisory Council of IRI-Colombia.
