In alliance with the Senate’s Accidental Commission on Forests and Climate Change, chaired by the honorable Senator Julio Estrada Cordero; the House Committee on Forests and Climate Change, led by the Honorable Representative Julia Miranda; and the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS), the Interreligious Initiative for Tropical Forests (IRI-Colombia) will hold the Political Forum “Congressmen for Life in the Amazon” on June 12, 2025 in the Congress of the Republic.
On April 23, the IRI-Colombia teams and the parliamentarian held a strategic planning meeting, with the purpose of addressing all the details of this important political and training meeting, which seeks to bring together many diverse voices and thoughts to identify routes of action aimed at the protection of life, the Amazon and indigenous peoples.
“Congressmen for Life in the Amazon” will be held in the framework of the celebration of World Environment Day and will be the scene of a high-level political dialogue between the Congress of the Republic, indigenous peoples, the scientific community and social actors, in which the threats facing the Colombian Amazon will be examined. the challenges in the implementation of public policies for its biocultural protection will be analyzed and a legislative agenda that places the Amazon and its peoples as a national priority will be promoted. In addition, the Initiative proposes that congressmen, indigenous peoples, religious leaders, scientists, and civil society organizations sign the “Declaration for Life in the Amazon,” as an expression of ethical will to act to care for life in the Amazon.
