The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative participated in the “Regional Consultation: Promoting Shared Sacred Flourishing in Latin America and the Caribbean,” organized by Religions for Peace and the Fetzer Institute and held August 26-28 in Bogota.
During the meeting, which brought together more than 60 religious leaders, academics, youth and women of faith, Shared Sacred Flourishing, a new development paradigm, based on human dignity, solidarity and social justice, was presented as a response to the challenges of the region and complement to the Sustainable Development Goals .
IRI-Colombia played a central role in this meeting by linking Shared Sacred Flourishing with the defense of the Amazon. Its experience in articulating religious leaders, indigenous communities, scientists and authorities showed how faith can mobilize political and territorial actions in favor of climate justice and the protection of life. He also reaffirmed that this paradigm can only be achieved by guaranteeing the protection of vital ecosystems and the safeguarding of indigenous peoples.
The event concluded with the Bogotá Declaration, in which participants reaffirmed their commitment to a transformative vision that integrates the sacred in human development, promotes dignity and the common good, and calls to work together for life and the care of creation.
“We embrace the Shared Sacred Flourishing initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean because it provides a response to the challenges of the region, with reverence for the sacred, respect for human dignity, commitment to the common good, and care for life and creation”, Bogotá declaration.
