IRI Colombia national facilitator, Blanca Echeverry, was invited to contribute to an esteemed program of speakers as part of the recent Amazon Climate Forum. The meeting was organized by Amazon Watch, Repam, Artists for Amazonia, Amazon Aid Foundation, Pan-Amazon Social Forum and COICA, and brought together leaders from different fields to express to the U.S. President Joe Biden their strategic vision and recommendations to address the threats facing the Amazon. They addressed issues such as the pandemic, deforestation, governance, the protection of environmental defenders, the illicit use of glyphosate on crops, the challenges indigenous peoples face and their vital role in protecting the Amazon rainforest.”New strategies to protect the Amazon rainforest must respond to the threats to human rights posed by the fumigation of illicit crops and the causes of violence against environmental defenders,” said Blanca Echeverry, in a program of speakers that included actors Morgan Freeman, actress Rosario Dawson and singer Barbra Streisand, prominent Amazonian indigenous leaders, environmental organizations and political leaders.
