Cardinal Pedro Barreto Jimeno, Metropolitan Archbishop of Huancayo; Tabea Casique Coronado, Secretary of the Board of Directors of Aidesep Pueblos Indígenas and José Álvarez Alonso, Senior Advisor of the Amanatari Association, all members of the IRI Peru Advisory Council, published an opinion article in El Comercio calling for the protection of forests as a priority climate strategy. The text that appeared in one of the most important media outlets in the country, was entitled “Called to heal our world!” and was issued in advance of COP28. The editorial read, in part, “The climate and the forests clearly tell us that the planet is sick and we, far from curing it with the medicine we know we must administer, continue to make it sick…From the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI Peru) we ask our authorities to give a gift to nature and all its living beings, bringing to COP 28 actions of the Peruvian State and not just promises.”
