From Words to Deeds: Development Plans with an Environmental Focus

“As religious leaders and people of faith, it is our ethical and moral duty to protect nature. As citizens it is our duty to work for this laudable mission, to ensure a planet for our future generations,” said Pastor Edgar Castaño, religious leader of the Baptist church, president of the Evangelical Confederation of Colombia and member of the Advisory Council of IRI-Colombia in the opinion column “From Words to Deeds: Development Plans with an Environmental Focus.”  published on March 5 in the web newspaper El Espectador. In it, the religious leader of the Baptist Church refers to the important challenge faced by newly inaugurated mayors and governors, the duty to include in their Development Plans the necessary programs to protect the Amazon and reduce deforestation, as well as the great opportunity provided by spaces such as the Territorial Planning Councils for different sectors of civil society,  as the religious, participate in the construction of these planning instruments and ensure that the destiny of municipalities and departments walks during the next four years towards a promising future for our Amazon and its inhabitants. “Therein lies the importance of spaces such as the Territorial Planning Councils, from which religious, social or community leaders, such as the members of the local chapters of the Interreligious Initiative for Tropical Forests in Colombia, can contribute to the formulation of the PDTs,” he concluded.
