IRI Indonesia participates in discussions on the MUI Fatwa on Climate Change Control Law and its application within faith-based movements to address climate change

In the dialogue on “Human Rights Aspects in the MUI Fatwa on Climate Change Control Law,” Dr. Dhahana Putra, Director General of Human Rights at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, endorsed the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa No. 86 of 2023 on the Law of Global Climate Change Control, stating that it aligns with human rights values. Dr. Hayu Prabowo, IRI Indonesia National Facilitator, emphasised the implications of climate change prevention failures on human rights and advocated for the integration of human rights into climate action for more effective and inclusive mitigation and adaptation strategies. Further, Dr. Prabowo was invited to the global press conference on the fatwa concerning the Law for Controlling Global Climate Change organised by Ummah for Earth Alliance, where he provided insights into how the fatwa has influenced behavioral and moral shifts within Indonesia’s Muslim community. The conference sought to foster participation and dialogue among various stakeholders – including government officials, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and members of the scientific and academic communities – on the evolution of the fatwa and its potential application within faith-based movements to address climate change challenges.
