IRI Peru has publicly denounced Bill No. 09653, a legislative proposal that could severely weaken environmental institutions and dismantle existing safeguards for Peru’s forests. Approved in mid-September by the Agrarian Commission of Congress, the bill now awaits debate in the Plenary, where 130 legislators will decide its fate.
According to IRI Peru’s official statement, the proposal “would gravely undermine Peru’s international climate commitments and jeopardize the water, food, and health security of millions.”
In a call for ethical leadership, the interfaith coalition reminded lawmakers that:
“Legislating against the protection of the Amazon is not only a political and technical regression — it is an ethical and spiritual offense. Forests are sacred: they safeguard life, biodiversity, and the balance of Creation for all humanity.”
IRI Peru urged Congress to reject the initiative and instead promote a national dialogue that includes civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and faith communities, to build a legal framework that strengthens forest governance, climate justice, and the dignity of Amazonian communities.
