IRI Peru coalitions and high-profile convenings aim to keep illegal mining on the national agenda

IRI Peru strengthened collaboration with the Illegal Mining Observatory by joining its electoral strategy group and preparing for a March electoral dialogue on party proposals to confront illegal mining, hosted at the College of Engineers of Peru. Ten Amazon media outlets jointly issued a statement defending forests, life and freedom and committing to investigative coverage of illegal mining and trafficking. IRI Peru also confirmed a major Lima conference featuring Cardinal Michael Czerny of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on Laudato Si’, with panelists from WWF, REPAM, AIDESEP and GRADE and participation expected from faith leaders, state actors, embassies, NGOs and civil society, aiming to connect policy debate to lived impacts such as mercury contamination, forest loss and insecurity, and to position faith leaders and journalists as accountability actors through the election season.
