Action agenda for COP30

On August 21, IRI-Colombia participated in a space for dialogue on the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, convened by the president of COP30, André Corrêa do Lago.

“COP30 will be a historic opportunity for Amazonian countries to arrive with a clear and unified position, capable of reflecting the region’s true priorities and committing to concrete actions to protect the Amazon biome, face the climate crisis and guarantee a common future”, said the diplomat, who stressed the urgency for Amazonian countries to build a unified climate agenda towards COP30, to be held in 2025 in Belém do Pará, Brazilian territory.

In addition, he stressed that the next conference should converge on five major areas of conversation: transition in the energy and transport sectors, sustainable management of forests, oceans and biodiversity, transformation of agriculture and food systems, building resilience in cities, infrastructure and water, and promotion of human and social development.

Blanca Lucía Echeverry, for her part, stressed that spirituality is not alien to environmental policy and, on the contrary, is an ethical and cultural force that currently mobilizes millions of people in favor of forests, water and life.

“The Amazon needs to be heard and COP30 must be a space where the voices of the region define the future of the forest and the planet,” added the national coordinator of IRI-Colombia.

The Initiative’s participation, along with other environmental organizations and initiatives, reinforces civil society’s commitment to accompany these efforts and ensure that global decisions incorporate the realities of the Amazon territory.
