IRI Peru raised concern over Bill 14288, introduced by Congressman Eduardo Salhuana, which would create an exceptional regime for hydrocarbon exploitation in Manu National Park, Bahuaja Sonene National Park and the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. The proposal triggered concern among Indigenous federations, environmental organizations and civil society actors working to protect forests and territorial rights in Madre de Dios. IRI Peru joined the opposition by sending a substantiated letter to Congress requesting the bill be definitively shelved and by widely distributing a public statement. By speaking against extractive threats to protected areas and Indigenous territories, IRI Peru is helping raise the political cost of legislation that would weaken Amazon safeguards.
