On 30 November, IRI Peru and the Ministry of Environment organized the dialogue, “Advances in the implementation of the intersectoral mechanism for the protection of environmental defenders”. The event had the objective of sharing advances and challenges facing stakeholders that are committed to responding to the increase of violence in the Peruvian Amazon, which has made environmental defenders (especially of indigenous people vulnerable. The dialogue sought to improve understanding of this problem and to consolidate strategies to address it.
The dialogue was attended by Raquel Soto, Coordinator of the Functional Unit for Environmental Crimes – UNIDA, of the Ministry of Environment and Ángel González Ramírez – Director of Human Rights Policies and Management, of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Comments were also made by Berlin Diques – President of the Regional Organisation AIDESEP Ucayali (ORAU), Sister Ana María Palomino – Coordinator of the IRI Puerto Inca, Víctor Zambrano – Environmental Ombudsman, Katherine Sánchez – Peruvian Society of Environmental Law and Iván Brehaut of Pro-Purús.
